Senators Derrick T. Simmons and David Blount to sponsor legislation eliminating Confederate Memorial Day and adopting Juneteenth as state holiday
At the start of the 2022 legislative session, Senator David Blount and I will sponsor legislation to repeal Mississippi’s Confederate Memorial Day – the last Monday in April - and replace it with Juneteenth – observed June 19, of each year.
With congress and President Biden agreeing, then working together to make it happen, now is the time to clean up even more of Mississippi’s tarnished past by shedding other ties to the confederacy.
