Senator Derrick T. Simmons bill to name Washington County portion of Mississippi-Arkansas bridge on Highway 82, the “Jesse Brent Memorial Bridge,” signed into law.

Governor Phil Bryant has signed into law Senate Bill 2173 that names the Washington County portion of the Mississippi-Arkansas bridge on Highway 82, the “Jesse Brent Memorial Bridge,” commemorating the historic achievements of the man whose vision and work ethic once made a stretch of Greenville waterways that was packed with towboats, barges and shipbuilders known as “The Million Dollar Mile,” because of its creation of commerce by utilizing the Mississippi River as a main source of transportation.

I authored that bill to memorialize the man who proved to Mississippi and the world at a time when Greenville didn’t have much going for it, that our people are creative and we rise to the top using whatever nature has provided us.

Jesse Brent in his early years became a pioneer by going into business with four others who by 1949 had established a small empire upon the waterways of our city, which was also called “The Towboat Capital of the World.”

In 1956, he struck out on his own and created Brent Towing Company that created thousands of jobs in the towing, shipping and hauling business on the Mississippi River. It was the biggest thing this area had ever seen and I am thankful that the governor chose to sign my bill into law so that we and the world can now pass by this thoroughfare and see the sign that honors one of Greenville’s founding fathers and one of our country’s pioneers.
